Personal Thoughts From an After-Ike Visit to Galveston
Upon hearing that the city leaders were going to allow citizens on the island to inspect their homes, Mom and I made a dash to the island in order to check things out.
Some notes:
There was a lot of damage, but Galveston is down and certainly not out. We have recovered from worse and will do so again.
The city leaders are working hard to make the island livable again, but too many folks have stayed on the island, and this is hampering recovery efforts.
The Monday morning quarterbacking by the some of the press needs to stop. I have been watching KTRH Channel 13’s coverage of the storm and its aftermath on my computer, and I have gone from being grateful for factual coverage to anger over what I feel is the reporters’ desire to create a story where none exists. People, the city leaders have a tough job ahead of them, and I truly believe that they are doing the best that they can do.
It was great to be passed on the highway into Galveston by numerous telephone and electrical trucks – they will give us back our infrastructure.
Patience is a virtue we now need to practice more than ever. Nobody wants to live in his own home and get back to his work more than I, but I’ll wait until it is safe. I hope it is soon.
