With the advent of telecommuting, Galveston, with its oceanside location, historic architecture, and community feel, has become popular with those whose livelihood is no longer tied to a physical location.
Almost a year ago, a nice couple with whom I worked had tried Austin but found it was not for them. Being familiar with and having enjoyed visiting Galveston in the past, they bought a home in the East End Historic District (she loves spending time outside on porches). He is a self-employed business consultant and works through email and telephone.
Recently, my buyer’s specialist worked with a couple who had lived for years north of Houston. She took a job in the Dickinson school district and he works from home, and they could not wait to move to Galveston. Happily ensconced in a rental for a few months, they will soon begin looking for the historic home of their dreams.
Lest you think that the telecommuters are only attracted to our historic architecture, a couple from Colorado that I have been working with are now under contract for a wonderful condominium at Pointe West with a great view of both the Gulf of Mexico and of West Bay. Originally thinking that they would buy a place at which they would only spend a few weeks a year, they are now talking about spending half of the year here since he is retired and she can telecommute.
I have always thought Galveston was a pretty cool place – it’s nice to see others realize that as well.
